Functional Safety

Progress in the automation of process facilities has led to the use of electronic and electromechanical systems as part of the basis of safety for many process and machinery applications. As a result, the Health and Safety Executive’s has intensified focus on Functional Safety of Process and Machine Safety System.

For a site operator, demonstrating that functional safety has been achieved for their industrial automation system has never been more important, and it is seen as a complex and costly exercise. This is in direct contrast to the principles behind the Functional Safety Standards series – IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 – which stipulates a risk-based approach to the design, operation, and maintenance of instrumented systems providing safety and/or environmental protection functions.

At KK Risk, our TUV certified engineers believe that by the application of good, robust and pragmatic systems, sites can adequately demonstrate that functional safety has been achieved for the instrumented systems used as part of the basis of safety for the site processes.

KK Risk has developed simplified methodologies that covers the entire Functional Safety Lifecycle from embedding Functional Safety Management in projects, and robust determination of Safety Integrity Level (SIL), through the completion of SIL Verification, and to Functional Safety Assessments. We can help with the development of User Requirements Specification (URS), Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS), review of Functional Design Specification (FDS), and can serve as an independent witness at Factory & Site Acceptance Testing (FAT and SAT).
