Risk Based Inspection

Recent incidents in the process industry have placed increasing emphasis on the design, and management of secondary & tertiary containment systems. The mantra “let’s keep it in the pipe” still means that the integrity of primary containment system should be the centre-piece of any asset integrity programme.

At KK Risk, we believe that primary, secondary & tertiary containment systems play important roles in process safety and environmental risk management. Our experience is that primary containment systems have robust asset integrity management regimes which are largely based on preventive maintenance principles. For secondary and tertiary containment systems, the asset integrity programmes are mostly based on the concept of breakdown maintenance. Where there is evidence of a preventive programme, it is usually as simplistic as periodic visual inspection.

For passive systems such as containment systems, KK Risk applies a risk-based approach to the inspection of containment system. This approach emphasis safe and reliable operation through a risk-prioritised inspection regime. We believe that this approach provides an optimal balance between limited resources and the risk of failure of these containment system.

KK Risk consultants leverage a wide range of industry experience and the application of best practice standards from internationally-recognised bodies such as EEMUA and API. Our consultants have experiences of extending the risk-based approach to the management of other layers of protection such as pressure relief devices, ignition control (Ex) equipment, etc.
